5. j) mood o the play at the end of Act 1

By he end of act 1, the mood is tensed and gloomy at the same time. They were settled in their new home and having a celebration which the thief and the Germans ruined. This was when the "family" was having a bit of hope or maybe they wanted to forget about their situation they're in. And the distraction and threat that they got, lowered them down and realize the truth. Everyone is hopeless by then, and the festival mood is gone. But the keep on trying to keep up the bright mood of Hanukkah. They begin to sing the song, still in fear, but happy that they are with their families. However, the writer shows this by the tone of the character's lines and the tension going on. They try to build their courage and faith just like when they first came into the hiding place. For example, Mr. Frank tries hard to tighten the family together. "(rising, to them all). Have we lost all faith? All courage? A moment ago we thought that they'd come for us We were sure it was the end.But it wasn't the end. We're alive, safe. :We thank Tee, oh Lord out God, that in Ty infinite mercy Thou hast again seen fit to spare us."" (p. 408). They have a strong faith in their religion and Mr. Frank really encourage the family to think positively. "Around the feast...we...gather/ In complete...jubilation.../Happiest of sea...sons/Now is here." (p. 409). The "..." shows how they feel insecure. But soon enough, they get back to their celebration accepting their situation. The mood here is confusing, blue, and wanting to hold on to something like hope.
